CLIMATE AND WINDS
The West Indies enjoy excellent weather conditions throughout the year with average temperatures (between 22° and 30°) and little variation between the winter and summer. This is a tropical climate which is both warm and wet.
WE CAN MAKE OUT TWO SEASONS
# The dry season, "the Carême", stretches from December to May, when there is maximum sunshine.
# In summer, from June to November, the climate is a little wetter with showers which are generally welcome as they freshen up the air.
Though the temperature of the water on average is 27°C, it reaches up to 30°C in August and September. With nearly 3,000 hours of sunshine a year, good weather is virtually guaranteed. And the bad weather never lasts very long so don’t forget the suncream!
THE WINDS
The Lesser Antilles are situated in the tradewind zone with generally steady E’ly winds rarely in excess of Force 6.
# December to May: the tradewind system is established, the weather is stable: E to NE’ly wind of 15 to 25 knots.
# June to November: the weather is generally hotter and more unstable. The winds vary between NE to S and 10 to 20 knots.
THE TIDES
# They are diurnal or semi-diurnal, according to the time and the place. There is low tidal range of 0.30 to 0.50 m and in particular areas it measures up to 1 m.
THE SEA STATE
# The sea is good to slightly moderate to leeward of the islands and can be moderate to big in the ‘channels’ between the islands.
The E’ly swell is frequent but small. However, the N’ly swell can be rough.
